In the News: Hattiesburg Zoo Expansion

Hattiesburg Zoo expansion

The recently-announced Hattiesburg Zoo expansion hopes to make a big splash by the summer of 2023! Construction on phase one of the future Serengeti Springs is scheduled to begin this month.

About the expansion

The Hattiesburg Zoo expansion is no small undertaking! In fact, the Serengeti Springs site will be located on 3.5 acres of Kamper Park.

The addition will actually be an extension of the existing Africa section of the zoo. The upcoming water park will mimic the look and feel of this exotic area of the zoo.

For now, plans for Serengeti Springs include several cool features. First of all, there will be the “Fusion Fortress” water play structure.

It will feature nine water slides of varying heights. There will be straight slides. Slides that twist and turn as well as the “soon-to-be-famous Serengeti Swirl.”

Other top features include the 150,000-gallon lazy river, a swim-up pool and bar, cabanas and group pavilions. There will also be a gift shop, changing rooms and showers with lockers, food trucks on-site and much more.

Another Fusion Fortress element that is sure to be a hit with the kids will be the 19 spray toys around the perimeter plus the huge “dump buckets” periodically dumping gallons of water on the guests!

Did we mention special animal presentations will be hosted at the park along with tropical animals that will call it home?

Future plans

If all goes according to plan, phase one of the Hattiesburg Zoo expansion will be complete just in time for next summer.

After that, construction isn’t expected to start on phase two for two to four years. As of now, phase two includes the building of a Slide Tower with up to four additional water slides.
